Moving company U-Haul has released its 2023 most moved-to cities in America, and all ten in the top tier are in red states. In fact, only four of the top 25 are in southern states.

The top ten cities where people rented U-Haul trailers to move their families were all red southern states.

Those cities include:

  • PALM BAY-MELBOURNE, FL
  • OCALA, FL
  • CHARLESTON-NORTH CHARLESTON, SC
  • SARASOTA-BRADENTON, FL
  • AUSTIN, TX
  • COLLEGE STATION-BRYAN, TX
  • CHARLOTTE, NC
  • HUNTSVILLE, AL
  • DALLAS, TX
  • MYRTLE BEACH-NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, SC

In fact, the only cities that are not in the South in the top 25 cities are Boise, ID (#14), Surprise, AZ (#18), Queen Creek, AZ (#23), and Nampa, ID (#25). And these are arguably in red states, too.

It can’t be a surprise, of course. Even the U.S. Census notes that blue cities are losing more citizens to outward migration than any other area in the nation.

In December, the bureau released a report on population and housing unit estimates, which found that blue states, including California, Illinois, and New York, are losing thousands more residents yearly, while red states, such as Texas and Florida, are growing.

The South is the big winner.

“The expansion of the South — the nation’s most populous region — accounted for 87% of the nation’s growth in 2023, as the region added over 1.4 million residents for a total population of 130,125,290,” the bureau’s report said.

“The South is the only region to have maintained population growth throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. The growth in 2023 can largely be attributed to the region’s migration patterns as 706,266 people were added via net domestic migration, while net international migration contributed almost 500,000 to the total,” the bureau added.

Meanwhile, blue states are failing.

“The Northeast’s population declined in 2023, down 43,330, but the loss was considerably smaller than the 216,576 decline in 2022 or the 187,054 decline in 2021, reflecting substantially less outmigration to other regions,” the report claims.

Also, New York and Pennsylvania were the only Northeastern states to lose population last year.

Eight states lost heavily in 2023, and six were blue states: California (down 75,423), Hawaii (4,261), Illinois (32,826), New York (101,984), Oregon (6,021), and Pennsylvania (10,408).

As for the red states, Louisiana (14,274) and West Virginia (3,964) were the only red states to lose population.

The Census Bureau noted that these eight states collectively lost 249,161 people in 2023 compared with a loss of 509,789 in 2022. The bureau also said most of these states have been losing population annually since 2020.

No one wants to live in a blue state.
