California leftists were shocked Tuesday when Proposition 36 passed by voters who want to put an end to bleeding heart criminal justice “reforms” that have made the state a hellscape of crime.
Prop 36 puts an end to Prop 47 which practically made crime legal in California by gutting what leftists called “harsh” sentencing for criminal activity. Prop 47 passed back in 214 with a strong nearly 20 point “yes” vote. The law recategorized many nonviolent offenses as misdemeanors, rather than felonies. Shoplifting and grand theft were two of the offenses that Prop 47 turned into a slap on the wrist.
Unfortunately, Prop 47 had the opposite effect from what was intended. Instead of helping give some small-time criminals a second chance, Prop 47 unleashed gangs to organize criminal theft gangs that coursed through the state destroy businesses and homes alike. And voters had finally had enough.
Per Fox 11:
Seemingly fed up with increased crime across the state, California voters have voted “yes” to Proposition 36 in favor of harsher penalties for crimes such as theft and drug trafficking.
In perhaps a likely foreshadowing, a survey conducted by the Public Policy Institute of California in September found 71% of voters supported the prop and at least 41% also said the outcome was “very important.”
This reverses Prop 47 that passed a decade ago, which was intended to offer alternative strategies to help reduce the state’s jail and prison population.
Now, certain drug offenses and thefts under $950 can be classified as felonies rather than misdemeanors if the suspected perpetrator has two or more past convictions for theft crimes.
The “yes” vote on 36 was also accompanied by the ouster of several left-wing politicians who facilitated the destruction of their cities.
