Tennessee Democratic Rep. Steve Cohen made an ill-advised analogy this week, comparing Donald Trump’s presidency to the tragic fire that tore through the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris.
The cathedral suffered significant damage when a fire broke out during renovations on Monday, burning for nearly 15 hours and causing severe structural devastation, including the destruction of the iconic spire.
While many mourned the loss of a national, world, and religious icon, Cohen saw an opportunity to disparage a President that he and his party despise.
The Democrat lawmaker spoke with MSNBC’s Chris Matthews on Monday, providing commentary about the soon-to-be-released Mueller report.
Like the fire that ravaged Notre Dame, Cohen claimed, so is Trump “torching” the government.
“What he has done to the Constitution and the rule of law is as bad as that fire did to Notre Dame,” Cohen asserts. “He’s torching the entire structure of government and the people’s respect for it. And the Congress needs to act.”
Our understanding is that such incendiary rhetoric is an incitement to violence against the President, as it allegedly was in the case of Rep. Ilhan Omar.
Cohen’s History of Wild Statements
Somebody on Cohen’s staff needs to pull him aside and let the congressman know that hyperbole is not his strong point. Apart from comparing Trump to the fire that destroyed Notre Dame he has:
- Suggested rogue FBI agent Peter Strzok deserved a Purple Heart for testifying before Congress about his anti-Trump messages and the Mueller report.
- Advised the military to do something about the President because “the Commander in Chief is in the hands of our enemy!” Allegedly.
- Claimed football greats Peyton and Eli Manning “don’t do sexual assaults against people other than their wives.” We’re sure their wives would be alarmed to hear that.
Textbook TDS
Cohen’s willingness to use irresponsible rhetoric to make the President look bad is a classic symptom of Trump Derangement Syndrome (TDS).
He represents the impeachment wing of the Democrat party, having introduced articles in 2017 over the President’s reaction to violence in Charlottesville, Virginia.

During the current session, Cohen has implied he has more than enough cause to bring articles of impeachment forward yet again.
“I think there’s a case for obstruction. There’s a case for emoluments violation,” Cohen claimed without evidence. “We’re getting so far along in seeing what this president has done and what he has done to the Constitution — what he’s done to the people’s respect for government.”
At this point, before we end this post, I (Jeff) have to make a necessary admission. When Cohen was running his first reelection campaign, your’s truly defended him in the Democratic Party primary.
During the 2008 campaign, he faced a battle for his seat against a challenger named Nikki Tinker that suggested that the voters in his district should not vote for him because he was white….and Jewish.
The flier was followed by a TV ad trying to connect Cohen with the KKK. The ad featured Cohen alongside a hooded Klansman, criticizing him for voting against removing a statue of Klan founder Nathaniel Bedford Forrest from a local park.
Oh and Rep. Cohen If you read this I would like to make one request as Jewish American– Could you consider changing your last name? It really isn’t helpful to the Jewish people for people to hear your ignorant statements and realize it was a Jewish person who made them. Haven’t we suffered enough?
