During his press conference on Thursday president Obama declared that Israel has backed off its opposition of the P5+1 nuclear deal with Iran. A statement that surprised many observers, especially those in the Israeli government.
Defending the Iran deal during the presser, Obama said in part:
And it’s not just the assessment of our intelligence community. It’s the assessment of the Israeli military and intelligence community — the country that was most opposed to this deal — that acknowledges this has been a game-changer, and that Iran has abided by the deal, and that they no longer have the sort of short-term breakout capacity that would allow them to develop nuclear weapons.
Israeli Defense Ministry reacted angrily to Obama’s statement, relating the Iran deal to the Munich Agreement negotiated by Neville Chamberlain.
“The Israeli defense establishment believes that agreements have value only if they are based on the existing reality, but they have no value if the facts on the ground are the complete opposite of those the deal is based upon,” the Defense Ministry said in a statement.
The Munich Agreement didn’t prevent the Second World War and the Holocaust precisely because its basis, according to which Nazi Germany could be a partner for some sort of agreement, was flawed, and because the leaders of the world then ignored the explicit statements of [Adolf] Hitler and the rest of Nazi Germany’s leaders,” the ministry said.
“This is the same regarding the agreement with Iran, which itself explicitly and publicly announces that its goal is to destroy the state of Israel. A US State Department document published this year states that Iran is the chief state sponsor of terror worldwide,” the response said. “Therefore, the Israeli security establishment, the nation of Israel, and many other nations around the world, understand that agreements like those signed between the world super powers and Iran aren’t helpful. They only damage the uncompromising struggle against nations which support terror.”
“Hence, the defense establishment, like the rest of the Israeli people and many in the world, understands that agreements of this kind signed between the world powers and Iran are not helpful, but only harm the uncompromising struggle that must be undertaken against a terrorist state like Iran,”
The Prime Minister also objected to Obama’s statement however in a more diplomatic way. He said
“The Israeli position on the Iran deal remains the same, but the prime minister staunchly believes that Israel has no ally more important than the U.S.”
It is very rare for the Israeli Defense Ministry to issue a statement like that reacting to a comment by the President of the United States. However Obama’s comment that Israel has backed away from her objections to the P5+1 deal was so egregious, so over-the-top false, they were compelled to respond harshly.
For the past eight years, Barack Obama has demonstrated a distain and lack of respect for the nation of Israel, and the Jewish people. The Iran deal negotiations which saw Obama capitulate to every Iranian demand does nothing to stop Iran from building up its nuclear capabilities after ten years.
The deal was was thought to be the crowning achievement of Obama’x anti-Israel strategy, and perhaps it is. However, lying about the Israeli government’s position on a crucial issue such as the P5+1 deal is pretty high up there, actually pretty low down there is probably more accurate.
