Now for the funniest story of the day to cleanse your palate, a battery fire from an electric emergency vehicle owned by a German fire department burned down the whole firehouse and destroyed millions of dollar’s worth of equipment and vehicles on Wednesday.

To compound the comedy of errors, the firehouse did not have a fire detection alarm system installed.

The fire broke out at the Stadtallendorf fire station in Hesse, Germany, destroying the whole facility, Euro News reported.

The damage was totaled at nearly $26 million, officials said.

“The fire broke out on an emergency vehicle belonging to the fire department, which contained lithium-ion batteries and an external power connection,” Euro News added.

Construction of the station had only been completed a year ago.

Euro News concluded:

“I believe that what has happened will make many people think and act,” about improving fire protection requirements at fire stations, Norbert Fischer, the head of the State Fire Brigade Association of the state of Hesse, said.

Precisely because there is a lot of technology in fire stations and batteries are being charged, it would make sense to equip them with fire alarm systems, Fischer said, noting it was unclear whether such a system could have prevented the worst in Stadtallendorf.

“This fire spread at breakneck speed,” he said.

Yep. Funniest story of the month.
