Satellite images captured over the weekend show a massive volcanic eruption in the Pacific Ocean that forced thousands of miles of coastline into an abrupt tsunami warning.

The event had an impact all along the west coast of the United States as well:

The underwater volcano near Tonga in the South Pacific sparked tsunami waves and a seaside spectacle Saturday on the California coast — nearly 6,000 miles away.

“Hello world, we are surviving the tsunami,” said Pacifica resident Savannah Peterson in a video, seconds after a giant wave crashed over a protective wall and into her home. “I can tell you it is happening y’all. It is happening.”in

The National Weather Service issued a tsunami advisory Saturday for coastal California and much of the West Coast and forecast tsunami waves of one to three feet, which may also coincide with high tide.

The event even caused one of southern California’s streams to flow backward.

The shockwave from the eruption spooked some onshore.  [Warning:  The following clip contains some mild profanity.]

The death toll in Tonga is unknown at the time of this writing, but locals appear to be optimistic about the impact of the wild event.
