Residents of a small town in Wisconsin are fighting against the town council for its obviously unconstitutional ban on Trump signs, a report says.

The Wisconsin Institute of Law and Liberty (WILL) has been engaged in a legal battle against the Village of Slinger, which is located just to the north east of Milwaukee, for the town’s attempt to put an end to free political speech after officials cited a man who had two Trump signs on his property.

One sign features a bald eagle and says “Trump Make America Great Again” and the second sign reads, “God Guns & Trump.”

WILL says that the city has sent the resident a letter on Feb. 12 telling him to take the signs down because they violate the town’s sign ordinance.

But the resident contends that the ordinance violates his freedom of speech.

“Government actors, no matter how big, small, or local, must adhere to the rights and liberties the U.S. Constitution guarantees American citizens,” WILL Associate Counsel Nathalie Burmeister said in a statement. “The Village should immediately cease its enforcement of their sign ordinance. The Village of Slinger has no authority to make value judgments about what speech is allowed and what is not.”

The resident WILL is representing is only one of several residents who received similar threatening letters from the town government.

Citing a Supreme Court ruling, WILL says the city’s ordinance is illegal. The group has also already successfully defended clients in other towns that had similar ordinances.

“The Village of Slinger does not have a compelling interest in the differential treatment of political signs, but this has not stopped it from attempting to enforce its unconstitutional ordinances against Village residents,” WILL stated.
