According to reports, one of the issues that Donald Trump hopes to address in his second belated term is to institute concealed carry permits reciprocity in every state, allowing a person with a permit in one state to legally carry his firearm in every other state.

On Sunday, Donald Trump Jr. posted a video of his father speaking of the issue, writing, “Boom! My father just announced concealed carry reciprocity. The Second Amendment will stay and remain protected.”

Trump had talked of the issue during his first term. But it never got done.

At the time, he spoke of the issue in his policy papers:

The right of self-defense doesn’t stop at the end of your driveway. That’s why I have a concealed carry permit and why tens of millions of Americans do too. That permit should be valid in all 50 states. A driver’s license works in every state, so it’s common sense that a concealed carry permit should work in every state. If we can do that for driving – which is a privilege, not a right – then surely we can do that for concealed carry, which is a right, not a privilege.

He also talked of it during his 2020 campaign, but we all know where that went.

Let’s hope he can get this done. Because it really is a crime that someone can be arrested and jailed in one state because they were carrying a gun that would have been perfectly legal at home.

Remember, the words are “Shall not be infringed.”
