U.S. Embassy In Beijing China

Many people were shocked at this afternoon’s leak that Max Baucus is about to be named Ambassador to China.  Some even wondered if Baucus was Jewish and he was looking for an endless supply of Chinese food–not true.

The real reason Baucus is going to take the trip eastward is that Harry Reid wants to remain Senate Majority Leader, and while this move probably won’t work he believes it’s worth the shot. Reid wants to make sure that Montana Lieutenant Governor John Walsh is the Democratic Party nominee in 2014, and making Baucus the Ambassador to China will help him get the nomination.

Allow me to explain.

Baucus a Democrat and one of the creators of Obamacare has decided not to run for reelection, not because he wants to retire but because he knows he will lose big (because he is a Democrat and one of the Creators of Obamacare).

Right now there are three declared candidates for the Democratic nomination to replace Baucus, Dirk Adams, rancher, businessman and former business law professor, John Bohlinger, former Republican Lieutenant Governor of Montana, and the aforementioned John Walsh, current Lieutenant Governor of Montana and former Adjutant General of the Montana National Guard.

On the GOP side Steve Daines Montana’s only representative in the U.S. House is running for the seat, and Many national political forecasters already have rated the race as leaning Republican – a potential pickup for the GOP.

Out of the three declared Democrats, Reid (and Obama) believe that Walsh will be the strongest candidate, so by sending Baucus to China, Montana Governor Steve Bullock (a Democrat) gets to name the person who will fill out the rest of Baucus’ term.  That person will be Montana Lieutenant Governor John Walsh who now gets to run for the Democratic Party nomination….as the incumbent.

That might work for the nomination, but It is highly doubtful it will help Walsh in the general election, in fact it will probably hurt him. The people of Montana are very savvy, they will recognize this as a slimy political deal and reject Walsh as the product of the same old beltway nonsense.
