House Republicans are moving to ban non-citizens from receiving food stamps. As well they should.
Why non-citizens get food stamps in the first place is anybody’s guess.
Republican Illinois Rep. Mary Miller has filed a bill that would prevent SNAP benefits from going to non-citizens.
“Taxpayer-funded benefits like SNAP are intended for Americans in need, not foreigners who break the law to enter this country,” Miller said. “That’s why I fought to include my proposal in the Agriculture Committee’s reconciliation plan, saving taxpayers up to $8 billion over the next decade and reversing Biden’s unlawful handouts given to millions of illegal aliens. I appreciate my colleagues on the committee for working with me to include this critical reform in President Trump’s One Big, Beautiful Bill.”
Illegals are already not supposed to get any such federal benefits. But Biden loosened the status of so many categories of migrants that literally millions of non-citizens now get food stamps.
The proposal would also cut federal benefits to states that refuse to stop giving benefits to non-citizens.
The bill would also codify into law an executive order signed by President Trump to prevent illegals from getting any sort of federal welfare benefits.
Again, that is as it should be. Why would we pay people to break our laws?
