The LA Times has decided to play one better than the Associated Press. Last month the syndicated news service announced they will no longer describe people who come into this country illegally as illegal, yesterday the LA Times announced that “undocumented aliens” was also verboten.
A memo from The Times’ Standards and Practices Committee announcing the change explains the move away from labels:
” ‘Illegal immigrants’ is overly broad and does not accurately apply in every situation. The alternative suggested by the 1995 guidelines, ‘undocumented immigrants,’ similarly falls short of our goal of precision. It is also untrue in many cases, as with immigrants who possess passports or other documentation but lack valid visas.”
Labels? They are called adjectives, their purpose is to give the reader context by quickly enhancing the noun. If labels are now out does that mean the LA Times will no longer say we have a “blue” sky? Will the movie reviewers call Ishtar a “lousy” move? Can they call Iron Man 3 an “action adventure” flick? Will the paper ever call Barack Obama the first “Black” President? Black is an adjective. How far will they go with this stupidity? Will adjectives be banned from the LA Times Crossword puzzles? Will the weather reports be allowed to use the word “cold” or sports pages the phrase “running quarterback?” How about violence? Can Sandy Hook be called a “horrible” tragedy? And will their liberal political writers stop referring to “stubborn” Republicans?
Do you think Cubans are fighting for healthcare or freedom from Communism?
Of course the LA Times wont ban all adjectives, only the ones that go against their liberal political correctness
Those crossing the border illegally are criminals. The moment they crossed over the border or overstayed their visa they broke the law. To be consistent the LA Times should no longer describe someone as a convicted murderer, alleged extortionist, etc.
This is nothing but madness, political correctness is destroying our ability to communicate! The next thing you the politically correct mainstream media will start calling illegals as the “I” word.
Before that happens, I humbly offer the LA Times a solution. Let’s label them like any other criminal– let’s use their crime in the description. My proposal is they begin to use the term “Criminally Trespassing Alien” it perfectly outlines what these people have done and their status in this country. That’s what words are for providing the reader with a verbal “picture” of the story.
