Yesterday Nancy Pelosi forgot one of the most important rules of politics, “When you find yourself in a hole–STOP DIGGING” She took an issue that was beginning to die down and made it hotter than the sun.  One of her arguments was that event if she objected there was nothing she could do about it.  Well today Fox News confirmed that back in 2004 when Pelosi was Chairman of the Intelligence committee she objected to a covert CIA operation and it was killed.  Expect more reports like that over the next few days as the CIA does it’s best to help Ms Pelosi dig her own grave.

In the meantime, Leon Panetta, Democrat and head of the CIA, sent a letter to his troops that disputed Pelosi’s accounts:

Message from the Director: Turning Down the Volume

There is a long tradition in Washington of making political hay out of our business. It predates my service with this great institution, and it will be around long after I’m gone. But the political debates about interrogation reached a new decibel level yesterday when the CIA was accused of misleading Congress.

Let me be clear: It is not our policy or practice to mislead Congress. That is against our laws and our values. As the Agency indicated previously in response to Congressional inquiries, our contemporaneous records from September 2002 indicate that CIA officers briefed truthfully on the interrogation of Abu Zubaydah, describing “the enhanced techniques that had been employed.” Ultimately, it is up to Congress to evaluate all the evidence and reach its own conclusions about what happened.

My advice—indeed, my direction—to you is straightforward: ignore the noise and stay focused on your mission. We have too much work to do to be distracted from our job of protecting this country.

We are an Agency of high integrity, professionalism, and dedication. Our task is to tell it like it is—even if that’s not what people always want to hear. Keep it up. Our national security depends on it.

Leon E. Panetta

The White House refused to be drawn into the debate Friday, with White House spokesman Robert Gibbs passed on giving his opinion in on whether the CIA lied to Pelosi.

“I appreciate the invitation to get involved, but I’m not going to RSVP,” he said.

I guarantee you that Panetta’s email was approved by the White House before it was released. In other words the White House is letting Pelosi hang herself.

Later in the day, the Speaker of the House responded to being “outed” by the Democratic CIA Director:

Pelosi Statement on Panetta Message to CIA Employees: “Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued the following statement today in response to a message today to CIA Employees from Director Leon Panetta:

‘We all share great respect for the dedicated men and women of the intelligence community who are deeply committed to the safety and security of the American people. My criticism of the manner in which the Bush Administration did not appropriately inform Congress is separate from my respect for those in the intelligence community who work to keep our country safe. What is important now is to be united in our commitment to ensuring the security of our country; that, and how Congress exercises its oversight responsibilities, will continue to be my focus as we move forward.'”

It is rumored that the end of Pelosi’s statement got cut off, it was to end with:

…He was no different from any other officer in the ward room, they were all disloyal. I tried to run the ship properly, by the book, but they fought me at every turn. The crew wanted to walk around with their shirt tails hanging out, that’s all right, let them. Take the tow line, defective equipment, no more, no less. But they encouraged the crew to go around scoffing at me, and spreading wild rumors about steaming in circles, and then old yellow-strain. I was to blame for Lt. Maryk’s incompetence and poor seamanship. Lt. Maryk was the perfect officer, but not Speaker Pelosi. Ah, but the strawberries, that’s where I had them, they laughed at me and made jokes, but I proved beyond the shadow of a doubt, with geometric logic, that a duplicate key to the ward room icebox did exist, and I’ve had produced that key if they hadn’t pulled the Caine out of action…Bush, Bush, Bush, Cheney, Cheney, Cheney, Rove, Rove, Rove, Bush, Bush, Bush, Cheney, Cheney, Cheney, Rove, Rove, Rove,Bush, Bush, Bush, Cheney, Cheney, Cheney, Rove, Rove, Rove, Bush, Bush, Bush, Cheney, Cheney, Cheney, Rove, Rove, Rove, Bush, Bush, Bush, Cheney, Cheney, Cheney, Rove, Rove, Rove, Bush, Bush, Bush, Cheney, Cheney, Cheney, Rove……….MOE LARRY CHEESE…
