Some House Republicans are submitting a bill, which will “impose sanctions against persons who knowingly provide material support or resources to the Muslim Brotherhood or its affiliates, associated groups, or agents, and for other purposes.” Muslim Brotherhood affiliated groups in the U.S. include the Muslim American Society (MAS), American Muslims for Palestine (AMP), the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the Islamic Circle of North America (ISNA), the Muslim Legal Fund of America (MLFA), the Muslim Alliance in North America (MANA) and the Muslim Ummah of North America (MUNA).
The bill currently has seven cosponsors: Peter Roskam (R-IL), Trent Franks (R-AZ), Cynthia Lummis (R-WY), Kevin Brady (R-TX), Steve Southerland (R-FL), Louie Gohmert (R-TX), and Doug LaMalfa (R-CA).
According to the Washington Free Beacon:
While the United States has designated individuals and certain affiliates of the Brotherhood in the past, this is the first time that Congress has moved to sanction the organization as a whole, including all of its member organizations.take our poll - story continues below
The 19-page bill seeks to build a case against the group as one of the leading sponsors of terrorism and argues that the Brotherhood has long been a key player in orchestrating attacks across the globe via its proxies.
The bill would direct the U.S. government to level all “available sanctions” to any person in the United States “who knowingly provides material support or resources to the Muslim Brotherhood or its affiliates, associated groups, or agents.”
It also moves to block anyone affiliated with the Brotherhood from receiving a U.S. visa, which could complicate the White House’s diplomacy efforts on multiple fronts.
Additionally, the bill would force a complete shutdown of any Brotherhood affiliates located in the United States and permit the removal of “any alien who is a member or representative” of the group
Many of the Muslim Brotherhood affiliated groups were named unindicted co-conspirators in the Holy Land Foundation terrorist funding group, and the FBI has specifically warned of CAIR’s terrorist ties. Despite those red flags some Democrats have close ties to the Muslim Brotherhood affiliates. Presidential Adviser Valerie Jarrett has given a keynote speech at a ISNA conference, other White House personnel have attended ISNA events. Congressional Democrats such as Keith Ellison, Nancy Pelosi and DCCC Chairman Steve Israel have headlined CAIR events, NJ Democrat Bill Pascrell allowed CAIR to use a Capitol conference room for an event, and Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-TX) presented a Certificate of Congressional Recognition to CAIR, just to name a few.
With support of Muslim Brotherhood affiliated organization at the White House as well as Congressional Democrats, the bill to sanction the organization as a terrorist one, will most likely face strong opposition.
