Admittedly there hasn’t been enough time to fully digest the proposal, but on first glance this “gang of eight” immigration framework doesn’t seem much different than the McCain, Kennedy, George W. Bush plan proposed six years ago.
The eight senators include John McCain (R-Ariz.) Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) who may have shown up simply because he sensed a television camera near, Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), Bob Menendez (D-N.J.) , Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.), and Michael Bennet (D-Colo.)
“Our legislation acknowledges these realities by finally committing the resources needed to secure the border, modernize and streamline our current legal immigration system, while creating a tough but fair legalization program for individuals who are currently here,” the outline states. “We will ensure that this is a successful permanent reform to our immigration system that will not need to be revisited.”

overhaul the legal immigration system as well as create a pathway to citizenship for the nation’s roughly 11 million illegal immigrants. But establishing that pathway would depend on whether the U.S. first implements stricter border enforcement measures and new rules ensuring immigrants have left the country in compliance with their visas. Young people brought to the country as children illegally and seasonal agriculture industry workers would be given a faster path to citizenship.
The Devil as they say, is in the details- like for example what happens to the people who applied to come into the country legally shouldn’t their applications be handled first? How exactly will border security be strengthened? There’s talk of more agents and technology. Will they have a free hand to do their job, or be rendered impotent as they have been during the Obama administration. Oh, and there are many more questions.
Right now it’s a whole bunch of empty statements which give me a feeling of déjà vu. The full details are still a month or two away.
ABC has the full transcript of the framework here.
