Gallup asked, “Between now and the 2020 political conventions, there will be a discussion about the qualifications of presidential candidates — their education, age, religion, race and so on. If your party nominated a generally well-qualified person for president who happened to be [characteristic], would you vote for that person?” The one characteristic the majority of Americans rejected was “socialist.” Fifty-three percent of Americans say they wouldn’t vote for a socialist 45% said they would. Only 17% of Republicans would vote for a socialist and only 45% of independents. But 76% of democrats would support a socialist candidate. Along with explaining the scary increase of radical liberalism in the party it is a predictor for November, Sanders may win the nomination, but he would lose a national election.
One nation under God? Next to socialists, the candidate least likely to get a GOP vote would be an atheist, 41% would vote for an atheist vs. 68% of Independents and 69% of Democrats. Which makes sense as most Republicans I’ve met are strongly connected to their faith.
Sadly only 42% of Republicans would vote for a well qualified Muslim.
Every other characteristic is accepted by at least 60% of all Americans.
And a message to Hillary Clinton, 86% of Republicans, 95% of independents, and 99% of Democrats would vote for a well-qualified female presidential candidate. This indicates that America didn’t reject Ms. Clinton because she is a woman. America rejected Hillary Clinton because she was a lousy candidate, with horrible policies.
It is important to note that this survey was taken of total adults. If registered or likely voters were asked, the results might be different. However, on Gallup’s Socialist question the spread between Republicans and Democrats may be wider.
