Over the last few years, extremist, left-wing California Gov. Gavin Newsom has been calling for a Constitutional Convention to trim the U.S. Constitution and to add left-wingery into it. But now his own Democrat buddies are asking him to dump those calls as American voters move right and Republicans continue to gain more power.
The thought over the last 20 years by the left has been that socialist Democrats were on the rise -- especially with young voters. So, they imagined that if they called for a constitutional convention to make changes to the law of the land, they would be able to get rid of things like the Second Amendment and free speech, and add left-wingery such as making healthcare, education, housing, open borders, and even food a "right."
A constitutional convention can't convene to make changes to the Constitution unless two-thirds agree to it (34 states). Meanwhile, any actual changes must be ratified by 38 states. And Democrats are coming to realize that their most cherished and extreme ideas will never rise to that threshold. Indeed, they may lose even worse and conservative ideas might be introduced, instead.
This worry seems valid. Since the rise of Donald Trump even back in 2016, the country has been slowly moving to the right. So, Democrats are right to be afraid that if a constitutional convention is convened, their horrid, anti-American ideas will lose even more ground.
As The Center Square noted:
Leading the charge is State Sen. Scott Wiener, D-San Francisco, who first abstained from then later voted against California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s latest call for a constitutional convention to pass new gun control laws.
Wiener introduced the bill but was joined by two other top California Democrats co-authoring the measure — State Senators Tom Umberg, D-Santa Ana, and Ben Allen, D-Santa Monica.
“The damage a Constitutional Convention could do to Californians’ basic rights is off the charts,” said Wiener in a statement. “There are no guardrails once a Constitutional Convention has been triggered: Once it begins, extremists could easily hijack it and drive the Convention to strip protections for women, LGBTQ people, workers, immigrants, or any number of other groups, while undermining democracy and locking in the power of the largest corporations on the planet.”
“California must do its part to prevent this chaos, and we must not allow our state’s previous calls for a Constitutional Convention to be co-opted by efforts to throw out the Constitution in pursuit of an extreme right-wing agenda,” continued Wiener.
If you don't know, this Wiener character is a real scumbag. He is a gay many who wants raping children to become legal. He is one of the most radical leftists in the state government.
But even he realizes that outside of Calif., his brand of extremism is seriously losing ground.
In any case, this is all no less than an admission by California Democrats that they knew damn well that their disgusting ideas are disliked by most sane people.
