When you are a community organizer and under attack there is only one thing to do, bring out the race card. The latest count shows ACORN under investigation in 20 states, its employees were charged with more than 50 counts of “election-related fraud,” and that ACORN has spent more than $1 million on restitution to avoid criminal prosecutions (although the Louisiana AG says that number is closer to $5 million). And that doesn’t even count the videotape/prostitution scam. The is more than enough evidence to show that ACORN is corrupt throughout its vast organization and in so many ways.
But not according to Bertha Lewis the CEO of ACORN. In a rambling statement given at the national press club today, Lewis called the attacks against the organization McCarthy-like and hinted the reason for the attacks were because they help “people of color.” And the entire thing was started by Carl Rove.
“For many years, there’ve been folks who’ve disagreed with our ideology or methodology that has gone after us,” Mrs. Lewis, ACORN’s chief executive officer, said in a speech at the National Press Club in Washington.
“I mean we, back going to 2004, we now see through e-mails from Karl Rove from the previous administration that ACORN itself was targeted, targeted to go after us so that we would stop doing voter registration because it was said that we were moving too many minorities to vote, changing the power dynamics on the local election and that we needed to be stopped.”
She also labeled as racist the infamous videos that show ACORN workers advising a man and young woman posing as pimp and prostitute how to circumvent the law. “These new filmmakers, [James] O’Keefe himself, told The Washington Post, ‘They’re registering too many minorities; they usually vote Democratic; somebody’s got to stop them,'” Mrs. Lewis said.
She decried a “modern-day Acorn McCarthyism,’’ and blamed some of the group’s current problems on its more than 40-year history of “going after the rich and the powerful.”
Lewis also said that ACORN was not guilty of voter fraud, there was not one example of anybody voting illegally because of ACORN. Technically she is correct, We know of thousands of people they tried to register illegally but we still don’t know the ones who slipped through and actually voted. So they are only guilty of voter registration fraud.
One thing that Lewis is correct about, this reminiscent of McCarthyism. Not Senator Joe McCarthy but Charlie McCarthy. Because for funding ACORN for all of these years, and ignoring the corruption stories until very recently the democratic party and the Main Stream media have proven themselves to be a bunch of dummies.
