The State Department told him not to go. Which is strange because when Obama was running for President he visited many of our allies, even had a giant rally in Germany.  Donald Trump went anyway.  The Republican nominee took a giant gamble by going down to Mexico to meet with President Pena Nieto. After all of the undiplomatic things Trump has said about Mexico, Nieto could have made the meeting very uncomfortable. But this trip to Mexico was probably the best thing Donald Trump has done since his convention speech.

Some people believe that Donald Trump went to Mexico to with the favor of the Latino vote…that’s nonsense, the Republican candidate knows that one speech could never do that. No Trump went to Mexico so he could convince independents and others on the fence that he can meet with other leaders without causing an international incident, and while looking like a president.

Both candidates were invited by President Nieto Trump said yes right away, Hillary probably thinking the Republican wouldn’t have the guts to make the trip was out maneuvered.

Part of the Democrat’s strategy is that Donald Trump is the diplomatic bull in a china shop, he will insult all our allies and start a nuclear war if he wakes up on the wrong side of the bed, In Mexico Donald Trump destroyed that image, he looked presidential and sounded diplomatic.  The last minute trip was the perfect set up for the immigration speech Trump will make later today.

Both leaders stressed the importance of secure borders, for Mexico to keep out American dirty money and weapons like the kind former AG Holder allowed to be sold to drug cartels in the Fast and Furious program. And America to keep out drugs and illegal immigrants (oh sorry I mean) criminally trespassing aliens.

At one point President Nieto referred to some of Trump’s statements, lamenting at the “misinterpretations and statements that have unfortunately hurt and affected Mexicans in the way he’s presented his candidacy,” but he added later that Trumps visit showed he had respect for our neighbor to the south,” I was sure that his genuine interest was to build a relationship.”

Nieto also pointed out that the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) was twenty-two years old and perhaps it was time to modernize the agreement, but any changes must be beneficial to all parties. He wanted to see a North America that was highly competitive with other regions of the world.

When Trump spoke he praised Mexican-Americans, saying that they have made “great contribution” to Americans. He added, “I have a great feeling for Mexicans. They are amazing people.” And that he’s employed many Mexicans who were “spectacular people with strong values of faith and community.”

He went on to list five points he had set out in his talks:

  • Ending illegal immigration
  • Securing the border, with the right to build a physical barrier or wall
  • Dismantling drug cartels and halting the flow of cash and weapons across the border
  • Improving the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA)
  • Keeping manufacturing wealth in the American hemisphere

We recognize and respect the right of either country to build a physical barrier or wall on any of its borders,” the Republican said, but when asked he said there was no discussion about who would pay for the wall. But after Trump left President Nieto tweeted. “Al inicio de la conversación con Donald Trump dejé claro que México no pagará por el muro.” Google Translate says the tweet means,  ” At the beginning of the conversation with Donald Trump I made it clear that Mexico will not pay for the wall.”  Which doesn’t sound like a discussion.  Trump was probably correct in not making it an issue as this was a getting to know you meeting not a negotiation.

Here’s the bottom line, the Democrats and the Mainstream media thought it impossible for Donald Trump to leave Mexico without creating some sort of international incident. But after a firm handshake, and a declaration that President Nieto is a “friend,” Trump strode out of the presidential palace in Mexico City looking presidential, looking diplomatic and calming the fears of many independents.

Sorry Hillary but you got out maneuvered big time.
