Last night Nancy Pelosi went off the deep end, she weighed in on the mosque controversy by telling San Francisco’s KCBS-AM radio that

“there is no question there is a concerted effort to make this a political issue by some.”

“I join those who have called for looking into how is this opposition to the mosque being funded,” she said. “How is this being ginned up?”

Who are these “nefarious” people who are protesting the Mosque, I mean besides democrats like Harry Reid?

My friend Ed Morrissey put it brilliantly on Hot Air:

“What better way to defend the First Amendment freedom of religion than to have the Speaker of the House ask the federal government investigate those exercising their First Amendment right to free speech?”

Let me get this straight, because she got two questions about the Mosque issue at a press conference, we have to investigate the finances behind people who oppose the mosque, very American Madame Speaker.  Pelosi’s comments are stranger than those of President Obama who had two different positions on the issue in less than 24 hours.

It doesn’t matter what your position is on the Mosque, this threat of an investigation was an obvious attempt to intimidate people from exercising their free speech. Judging by this comment and many of her political positions, the last time Pelosi looked at the constitution must have been a very long time ago.

Maybe Ms Pelosi is just losing it because she sees that someone else will be the speaker during the next Congress, so she is lashing out at just about everybody.

Seeing the criticism of last night’s statement, Pelosi walked back her comments a bit. Her office released the following:

“The freedom of religion is a Constitutional right. Where a place of worship is located is a local decision.

“I support the statement made by the Interfaith Alliance that  ‘We agree with the ADL that there is a need for transparency about who is funding the effort to build this Islamic center. At the same time, we should also ask who is funding the attacks against the construction of the center.’

“For all of those expressing concern about the 9/11 families, we call upon them to join us in support of the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act when Congress returns in September.”

Translated into English that statement means:

OK people are pissed off about the first statement, which I admit was stupid, but I can’t walk it back completely so I will add an investigation of the mosque funders so I can now appear to be even handed.

Nancy should shut up and start packing up her office, she will be moving into new one next January.
