A shocking piece of news from Great Britain Phil Jones, head of the Climate Research Unit of the University of East Anglia, who’s emails are at the center of Climategate is stepping down pending the results of a university investigation. But he still defends his research:

The director of a research unit at the centre of a row over climate change data today said he would stand down from the post while an independent review took place.

Professor Phil Jones, director of the University of East Anglia’s Climatic Research Unit (CRU), has said he ‘absolutely’ stands by the science produced by the centre – and that suggestions of a conspiracy to alter evidence to support a theory of man-made global warming were ‘complete rubbish’.

He said today he would stand aside as director until the completion of the independent review, which is being conducted in the wake of the allegations by climate ‘sceptics’.

The material was taken from servers at the world-renowned research centre before it was published on websites run by climate change sceptics, possibly in a bid to undermine the global climate summit starting next week in Copenhagen.

Professor Jones, which one of these emails are “rubbish?” The one about…

Hiding Evidence?

Dear Ray, Mike and Malcolm,
Once Tim’s got a diagram here we’ll send that either later today or first thing tomorrow.

I’ve just completed Mike’s Nature trick of adding in the real temps to each series for the last 20 years (ie from 1981 onwards) amd from 1961 for Keith’s to hide the decline. Mike’s series got the annual land and marine values while the other two got April-Sept for NH land N of 20N. The latter two are real for 1999, while the estimate for 1999 for NH combined is +0.44C wrt 61-90. The Global estimate for 1999 with data through Oct is +0.35C cf. 0.57 for 1998.
Thanks for the comments, Ray.
Cheers

Erasing Emails to Hide Anti-Global Warming Evidence ?:

From: Phil Jones
To: “Michael E. Mann”
Subject: IPCC & FOI

Mike,
Can you delete any emails you may have had with Keith re AR4?
Keith will do likewise. He’s not in at the moment – minor family crisis.
Can you also email Gene and get him to do the same? I don’t have his new email address.
We will be getting Caspar to do likewise.
I see that CA claim they discovered the 1945 problem in the Nature paper!!
Cheers

Which one of these Emails are bogus? Come on Phil explain them?

Prof Jones said: ‘What is most important is that CRU continues its world-leading research with as little interruption and diversion as possible.

‘After a good deal of consideration I have decided that the best way to achieve this is by stepping aside from the director’s role during the course of the independent review and am grateful to the University for agreeing to this. The Review process will have my full support.’

Professor Peter Liss will become acting director while the review is conducted, the university said.

Professor Jones is not the only Climategate figure in trouble.  There is new news regarding the investigation of Professor Mann inventor of the historical temperature “hockey stick.” Penn State is questioning his suppression of data.

Lisa Powers, spokeswoman for Penn State, told The Daily Collegian that an ad hoc committee would review each and every one of the e-mails, a process that “could take quite some time.” Mann himself indicated to the student paper that he was not afraid of the inquiry.

When The Daily Collegian asked Mann about Phil Jones’ request for deletion of information, Mann acknowledged having received the request, but denied having made any deletions himself and suggested that no one else did, either. But that statement is at variance, not only with Phil Jones’ initial letter to Mann, but also with Mann’s immediate reply.

Mike:

The “Keith” referred to is never identified but is most probably Keith Briffa, Jones’ second-in-command at CRU. “AR4” refers to Fourth Assessment Report, the latest such report issued by the UN-IPCC.

The “Gene” presumably is Eugene R. Wahl, who is now employed at the National Climatic Data Center as part of its Paleoclimatology program. And in File No. 1212063122.txt (Mann to Jones, on subject “Re IPCC & FOI”), Mann makes this especially damaging statement:

I’ll contact Gene about this ASAP. His new email is: [email protected]

Time to go to Sam’s Club and get the Extra-Large bag of Popcorn, this is going to be fun too watch.
